This report comes from Eric Haak:
Early on Thanksgiving morning, just before sunrise, a fire broke out at the former Wing Hoe restaurant in Chicago’s 9th Battalion area. The building, originally constructed as a private residence in 1913, had been operating as the Wing Hoe since 1971. At the time of the fire, it was vacant and set for demolition. In fact, crews had been working inside the structure just the day before. The building was a two-and-a-half-story brick structure with a basement, and the fire appeared to have started there.
Engine Company 83 made a strong attempt to get a line on the fire before it spread, but due to the compromised floor structure and heavy smoke, they were forced to switch to a defensive strategy. I arrived as the fire department was pulling the box, and the entire building was already engulfed in thick smoke. Engine Company 59 entered through a rear door that led to the basement, taking a safe approach, but the fire had already extended significantly.
To bring the situation under control, a Snorkel, tower ladder, two RAM units, and several hand lines were deployed. Firefighters worked aggressively to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading further. The response was quick and coordinated, highlighting the professionalism of the Chicago Fire Department.
Photos from Eric Haak capture the intensity of the scene, showing the fire trucks, equipment, and the dramatic aftermath of the blaze. These images provide a visual account of the efforts made by the first responders during this challenging incident.
