This morning, the Newport Township Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 35000 block of N. Mill Creek Road in Wadsworth. The house, located far from the main road and nearly directly behind I-94 near the toll booth, presented a challenging situation due to its remote location. Upon arrival, firefighters struggled to locate the fire until they navigated the long driveway leading to the property. They discovered a large two-story home engulfed in flames on the upper level. The area lacks hydrants, prompting an immediate upgrade to a Box Alarm and later to a second alarm as the situation worsened. One engine and a 75-foot quint managed to reach the driveway, initiating a relay operation from the street. Portable tanks were strategically placed on the road to supply water via two 5-inch lines to both the quint and the engine positioned in the driveway. As the fire escalated, it became necessary to transition to a defensive strategy. Additional hand lines and an aerial pipe were deployed. The extensive water demands and the distance tenders had to travel to refill resulted in the alarm being upgraded to a fourth alarm to accommodate more tanker support. Firefighting efforts involved numerous departments from both Illinois and Wisconsin. Among those present were Newport Township (with two engines, an ambulance, two tenders, and several chiefs), Wauconda (with an ambulance), Round Lake (a tender and chief), Zion (a truck and chief officers), Antioch (an engine, an ambulance, and a chief), Winthrop Harbor (a quint and a chief), Waukegan (an engine), Beach Park (an engine), Gurnee (an engine and a chief), Lincolnshire-Riverwoods (an ambulance), Grayslake (a tender), Richmond (a tender), McHenry Township (a tender), Countryside (a tender), Lake Villa (a tender), Fox Lake (a squad), Lake Forest (a squad), Quad 2 Rehab Unit, and Mobile Command Post. Wisconsin departments included Bristol (a tender and chief), Trevor (a tender), South Shore (a tender), Salem (a tender), Pleasant Prairie (a tender), Paris (a tender), Twin Lakes (a tender), and Somers (a tender). The fire caused significant damage to the upper level, ultimately resulting in its destruction. Photos captured by Larry Shapiro provide a detailed view of the extent of the damage, including the rear and front of the house, as well as firefighters working inside the garage. A gallery of additional images can be viewed [here](#). Despite the collaborative efforts of multiple departments, the fire left the structure severely compromised. The incident highlights the importance of coordinated responses in rural areas where access to water and resources can be limited.
