In a recent development, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District Trustees officially inked an agreement with Paramedic Services of Illinois (PSI), based in Schiller Park, to supply the district with 33 full-time firefighter/paramedics once they start operating independently on January 1, 2014. This signing took place during a special meeting held on September 5th, allowing Fire Chief/Administrator Jeff Swanson to collaborate with PSI to ensure that the district's Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington fire stations are fully staffed. During this meeting, trustees also delved into discussions with PSI regarding potential strategies to enhance staffing levels through additional part-time personnel.
The plan outlines that recruitment will commence in October, followed by firefighter training and station familiarization starting in early November. It’s worth noting that all District firefighter/paramedics will technically be employed by PSI but will report directly to Chief Swanson.
Under this staffing arrangement, PSI will extend job offers to Barrington firefighters keen on continuing their careers with the BCFPD post their December layoffs from the village.
The delay in signing the PSI contract was due to the village withholding the names of the affected firefighters, making it challenging for the District and the concerned firefighters to adequately prepare. Fire Chief Swanson expressed his hope for immediate disclosure of these names, giving the affected firefighters sufficient time to apply for positions within the District.
These firefighters can expect to receive compensation and paid leave benefits equivalent to their previous roles in the village. Furthermore, they will have the chance to take up officer roles within the new department.
In other news, the BCFPD trustees received a supportive letter from elected officials representing Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, North Barrington, South Barrington, Barrington, and Cuba Townships, along with Lake County—almost every jurisdiction served by the District. The letter commended the trustees' decision to approve the staffing agreement with PSI, emphasizing that it would ensure the availability of qualified, experienced personnel, including those potentially affected by the village’s reduction in workforce.
With the PSI agreement now sealed, the District trustees will shift their focus towards finalizing a date to split the shared apparatus and equipment owned jointly by the District and the village of Barrington. Depending on how the equipment is allocated, board members might explore purchasing supplementary equipment.
