On Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2023, Palatine firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the third floor of an apartment building located at 12 E Dundee Quarter. As the situation escalated, Palatine police officers observed smoke and then flames emerging from the roof, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a Code 4 working fire.
Fire crews launched an interior attack with two hose lines on the third floor, conducting thorough searches throughout the building. However, due to the intense volume of fire above and in the mansard roof, along with rapidly deteriorating conditions, firefighters were forced to evacuate the structure and transition to a defensive operation. During the evacuation, a firefighter on a balcony called for help after being unable to exit through the interior. He successfully descended a ground ladder to safety.
The fire managed to bypass the fire wall and spread into the adjacent building, causing significant damage to its roof and third floor. Multiple structural collapses occurred in the original building, raising concerns about the stability of the entire structure.
Several area fire departments responded to the scene, including Palatine Fire Department, Arlington Heights Fire Department, Buffalo Grove Fire Department, Mount Prospect Fire Department, Lake Zurich Fire Department, Barrington Fire Department, Inverness Fire Department, Hoffman Estates Fire Department, Rolling Meadows Fire Department, and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District. Additional units may have arrived later as the situation developed.
Palatine Tower 85, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, and Arlington Heights Tower 1 deployed master streams to help control the fire. The fire remains under investigation, and no casualties have been reported so far. Residents in the area were advised to remain cautious and stay tuned for updates from local authorities.
