**Lausanne, March 6, 2024**: Flyability, the global leader in confined-space drones, has introduced a groundbreaking ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) payload for its flagship drone, the Elios 3. This new feature was developed in collaboration with Cygnus Instruments, a world-renowned expert in ultrasonic testing technology. The partnership aims to provide certified UT inspectors with a more efficient and safer way to perform thickness measurements in hard-to-reach areas.
The live A-scan UTM payload is designed for spot thickness measurements on steel structures such as ship hulls, tanks, and pipe racks. It allows inspectors to access critical measurement points without the need for scaffolding or other traditional methods. The Elios 3 can navigate tight spaces and reach high areas, making wall thickness gauging and corrosion surveys faster and safer. The smart arm equipped with a laser pointer ensures precise targeting of measurement points, while a remote couplant dispenser guarantees optimal ultrasound transmission. Each measurement is tagged on a digital twin of the asset, streamlining data analysis.
In addition to the UTM payload, the Elios 3 can also carry a cleaning module to prepare surfaces before testing. “Since our early projects with customers in the oil and gas, maritime, and chemical industries, the demand for UTM alongside visual inspections has been strong,†said Patrick Thévoz, CEO and co-founder of Flyability. “After four years of development, we’re proud to offer a reliable, safe, and effective alternative for areas that are otherwise unreachable.â€
Quality and compliance have been central to this innovation. Flyability worked closely with Cygnus to integrate ultrasonic measuring technology into the Elios 3, creating a product tailored for complex industrial environments. The software integration with the Cockpit app enables real-time visualization of the A-scan and manual adjustments for gain and gates. The payload also supports through-coating echo-echo measurement mode using twin crystal transducers, ensuring accuracy and reliability under ISO 16809 standards.
