Former Glenbrook FPD Fire Chief Donald Long
Donald E. Long, a cherished resident of Glenview for over 90 years, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Mary Long (nee Rieb) for 66 years, and a proud father to Linda (Dennis) Burmeister and Cheryl (Martin) Haugen. He leaves behind four grandchildren—Bryan (Erin) Burmeister, Matthew (Laura) Burmeister, Christopher Haugen, and Emma Haugen (fiancé Travis Toliver)—and one great-granddaughter, Elaine “Ellie.†Don was also the brother of Melvin (Late Lois) Long and the late Virginia (late Alfred) Winkleman.
A graduate of Oakton Community College and Southern Illinois University, Don served with honor in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He dedicated many years to volunteer firefighting with the Glenbrook Rural Fire District, where he was among the first three hired and eventually became Fire Chief. He held numerous leadership roles, including Past Commander of Joseph Sesterhenn Glenview American Legion Post #166, Past President of the Glenview History Center, and Glenview Council of the U.S. Navy League. Don was an active member of the Glenview Sunrise Rotary Club, Glenview Naval Air Museum Board of Directors, Starlite Singers, and a Civil War Reenactor. He also served as team captain for Rebuilding Together for many years.
In 1994, Don was honored as Glenview Citizen of the Year and received Oakton Community College’s Alumni of the Year award. One of his greatest passions was volunteering as a docent at the Wagner Farm in Glenview—a role that deeply resonated with him, as he grew up on a farm in the same area that is now known as Flick Park. A lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, he held various leadership positions, including Chairman of the Congregation, Property Commission, and Cemetery Board. He was also a long-time member of the church choir and participated in many theatrical productions.
Visitation will be held at N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Road, Glenview, on Wednesday, September 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. A second visitation will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1850 Chestnut, on Thursday, September 23, from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Glenview History Center or the Glenview Naval Air Museum.
