The Village of Hoffman Estates is located 30 miles northwest of Chicago. Incorporated in 1959, it has a population of around 52,000 and covers 21.3 square miles. The community has seen steady growth over the past five decades, with a strong focus on quality living and convenient access to major highways, rail lines, and O’Hare International Airport.

Hoffman Estates is known for its excellent schools, affordable housing, and abundant green spaces. It’s home to several major employers, including Sears Holdings, the Sears Centre Arena, Siemens Healthcare, and Cabela’s. The area also features three large forest preserves offering over 4,000 acres of open space and trails.

The Department

Established in 1959, the Hoffman Estates Fire Department is committed to excellence in fire protection and emergency medical services. With a team of 72 firefighter/paramedics, the department serves four fire stations across 21.3 square miles. They offer specialized services such as hazardous materials response, technical rescue, dive operations, and public education. As a founding member of M.A.B.A.S., the department has long been a leader in emergency response and innovation.

The starting salary for a firefighter/paramedic is currently $61,043 per year.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, candidates must be U.S. citizens, have a valid Illinois driver's license, a high school diploma or equivalent, and meet specific vision and hearing requirements. Candidates must also hold a valid EMT-P license from the Illinois Department of Public Health and pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Ladder Climb Test before July 12, 2014. Applicants must be between 21 and 35 years old, unless they are former full-time firefighters in Illinois.

Firefighter Preference Points

Preference points may be awarded for veterans' service, educational background, and prior firefighting experience. These points can impact final rankings and eligibility for the position.

Applications

Applications are managed by Selection Works and cost $40. They are available from May 7, 2014, through June 13, 2014. All documents must be submitted by 2:00 p.m. on June 13, or applicants will be considered ineligible. Applications are delivered as a PDF and must be completed using Adobe Reader.

Testing Process

The testing process includes a written exam and a situational judgment test, both administered on July 12, 2014, at Hoffman Estates High School. Candidates must arrive by 9:00 a.m. for orientation. After passing the initial tests, candidates will go through additional steps, including a polygraph, background check, oral interview, and physical evaluations.

Post-Appointment Requirements

New hires must complete training, pass a medical evaluation, and successfully complete a 12-month probationary period. Certifications in fire service and hazardous materials are required within specific timeframes after appointment.

Currently, there are at least five (5) immediate openings in the Hoffman Estates Fire Department.
