A few days ago, many residents received a letter in their mailbox titled “Save the Knollwood Fire Department.” Is the fire department really in danger? And can the petition mentioned in the letter actually make a difference? Let's break it down.

The mission of Knollwood Neighbors is to keep residents informed about local issues, but we don’t take sides or tell people how to vote. With that in mind, here’s what we’ve gathered from the letter.

The letter makes three key points, all of which are accurate:

1. Right now, the three Rockland Fire Protection District trustees are appointed by the Lake County Board President, not elected by the residents. This means we have no direct input on who represents us. However, this could change through a legal process involving a petition and then a public referendum.

2. Under a new state law, the county board has the power to dissolve the Rockland Fire Protection District, which would strip us of local control over our fire services. Even if that happens, we’d still pay taxes for those services—though the cost and service quality would be determined by the county, which might outsource them to other departments.

3. If the district board were changed to an elected one, it would be exempt from that specific part of the law, meaning the county wouldn’t be able to dissolve the district without our consent.

The petition referenced in the letter is aimed at getting a referendum on the ballot in April. Residents would then vote on whether to transition to an elected board. To qualify, the petition needs signatures from 10% of the registered voters in the district.

This initiative is the result of a group of concerned citizens working together to raise awareness and protect local control over our emergency services.

Thanks, Dan
