A few days ago, many residents received a letter in their mailbox with the headline “Save the Knollwood Fire Department.†Is the fire department really in danger? And could the petition mentioned in the letter actually make a difference?
The mission of Knollwood Neighbors is to keep residents informed about issues that may affect them, but we don’t take sides or tell people how to vote. With that in mind, here’s what we’ve gathered.
The letter makes three key points, all of which are accurate:
1. Right now, the three trustees of the Rockland Fire Protection District are appointed by the Lake County Board President, not elected by local voters. This means residents have no direct say in who represents them. However, this can be changed through a legal process that includes collecting signatures and holding a referendum.
2. Under a new state law, the county board has the power to dissolve the Rockland Fire Protection District, taking away local control over our fire services. Even if that happens, we would still pay taxes for those services—but they would be managed by other departments under county control.
3. If the Rockland Fire Protection District board were elected instead of appointed, it would be exempt from this law, meaning the county wouldn’t be able to dissolve it without local input.
The petition referenced in the letter is designed to bring this issue to a vote in April, where residents will decide whether to switch to an elected board. To get on the ballot, the petition needs signatures from 10% of registered voters in the district.
This initiative is the result of a group of concerned residents working together to raise awareness and encourage community involvement.
