From *The Chicago Tribune*:
A historic Chamber of Commerce building in Lyons, a west suburban town, suffered major damage after a fire broke out overnight. The two-story structure at 3901 Joliet Ave., once a local landmark, was engulfed in flames around 2:30 a.m. and remained burning until about 6 a.m.
Fire Chief Gordon Nord told reporters that when firefighters arrived, flames were visible from the first-floor windows. “It really overpowered us,†he said. “We had to pull everyone out and switch to a defensive strategy.â€
Nord confirmed that the building will need to be demolished due to the extent of the damage.
From *CBS Chicago*:
No one was injured in the fire that destroyed one of Lyons' most recognizable landmarks. The vacant Chamber of Commerce building, located at 3901 Joliet Ave., caught fire just after midnight. The two-story, ivory-colored structure, built in the early 1900s, features unique architectural details such as ornate doorways and castle-like towers.
Though the building had been empty for years, it remained a symbol of the town’s history. Despite still having electricity, gas service had been disconnected for some time, according to Fire Chief Nord.
Firefighters spent nearly four hours battling the blaze, which caused the collapse of one of the building’s turrets. Nord described the situation as extremely challenging, with heavy fire and difficult-to-reach voids in the ceiling.
As of early Friday, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, the damage was so severe that the building is now deemed unsafe and will have to be torn down.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
