The McCook Fire Department has been battling a significant mulch fire since early morning at the location on 5300 Lawndale. For most of the day, they relied heavily on a tanker shuttle system to supply water to the scene. The fire is located deep within a massive mulch pile, making direct access nearly impossible.
As the afternoon progressed, the firefighters decided to shift their strategy. They released the tankers and called for reinforcements from Chicago, requesting a hose wagon (6-1-2) and a turret wagon (6-7-6). It’s worth noting that the new turret wagon (6-7-6) arrived at the scene, marking its first deployment. This marks a crucial step in their efforts to contain the blaze.
A few contributors have been present at the site, capturing moments with their phones. Josh Boyajian and Tim Olk have already shared several cell phone images, and we anticipate receiving more detailed photos later tonight. This operation is expected to continue well into the night.
Attached below are some of the images captured by these contributors. The first image, provided by Josh Boyajian, gives us a clear view of the extensive damage caused by the fire. Another series of photos, taken by Tim Olk, highlights the impressive work of the CFD Turret Wagon 6-7-6 as it tackles the mulch pile fire. These visuals underscore the scale and intensity of the firefighting effort.
