The McCook Fire Department has been battling a significant mulch fire since early this morning at the location on 5300 Lawndale. Throughout much of the day, they relied heavily on a tanker shuttle system to transport water to the scene due to the lack of direct access to the fire, which is located at the rear of a massive mulch pile.
As the day progressed, the firefighters made adjustments to their strategy. In the late afternoon, they decided to release the tankers and called for additional resources from Chicago, including a hose wagon (6-1-2) and a turret wagon (6-7-6). This marks what is believed to be the first deployment of the newly introduced 6-7-6 turret wagon.
Several individuals, including contributors Josh Boyajian and Tim Olk, have been present at the scene to document the ongoing efforts. They’ve shared several cell phone photos, and we anticipate receiving more detailed images later tonight. This firefighting operation is expected to continue for an extended period given the scale and complexity of the situation.
Attached are multiple images capturing different angles of the fire. These photos, taken by Josh Boyajian and Tim Olk, vividly illustrate the intensity of the blaze and the critical role played by the responding units. As the situation develops, we remain committed to providing updates and further visual coverage.
