Located 40 miles southwest of Chicago, the Joliet Refinery is expanding its emergency response capabilities by adding a new Ferrara Inferno® Industrial Super Pumper® to its fleet. This advanced unit is designed to meet the specific needs of industrial fire protection, especially in high-risk environments like refineries.
Chief Michael Smith from ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery shared his thoughts on the decision: “We needed a high-flow fire apparatus to handle the increasing demands of our infrastructure. Maneuverability was also key, and we had tight deadlines. Ferrara delivered everything we asked for and more with the Inferno model.â€
The design team at Ferrara worked closely with the refinery’s safety and operations staff to customize the unit. The final product is a heavy-duty two-door cab with a MAXX-Strength marine-grade aluminum body. It includes the innovative Wireless Remote Controlled Task Force Tips Tsunami deck gun, which reduces the number of personnel required to set up large flow monitors—making operations faster and safer.
In addition, the unit is equipped with the FoamPro® AccuMax® Fusion system, offering 300 GPM of concentrated foam and dual 3†intake connections. This upgrade enhances the refinery’s ability to respond to different types of fires, especially when compared to their existing balanced pressure systems.
Chief Smith added, “The Super Pumper allows us to respond more efficiently with fewer people. It’s a big step forward in safety and preparedness for the Joliet Refinery.â€
