As I sit here reflecting on the day's events, one particular fire call really stands out. It happened earlier today when we were dispatched to the 4300 block of Henderson for a structure fire at a small house known for being cluttered with hoarding conditions. The house was located on a quiet dead-end street that ended at a railroad embankment. When our truck arrived first, both engines had to back into the block so they could lead out easily later, eventually connecting to the same hydrant. Engine 91 hooked up to Engine 7’s gate valve since there wasn’t enough room for everyone to set up separately. The biggest challenge was a massive tree that blocked any chance of using a tower or aerial ladder for roof access. This meant that the only option was to use ground ladders, which made the operation more difficult and required extra care. Despite these challenges, the team worked efficiently and managed to handle the situation quickly. Looking through some photos taken by Steve Redick, you can see the firefighters hard at work. In one image, they’re placing a ground ladder while another shows them breaking a window with a pike pole. There’s also a shot of a firefighter climbing the ladder, highlighting the physical demands of their job. The hoarding conditions inside the house added another layer of complexity, making it even harder for them to navigate and extinguish the flames. It’s not just about the fire itself; it’s about how the crew adapts and works together under pressure. For instance, in one picture, you see Engine 7 parked nearby, ready to assist. Another photo captures Engine 91, clearly marked with its distinctive decals. The hydrants played a crucial role too—two lines were attached to ensure there was enough water pressure throughout the operation. Overall, it was a tough job, but one that was carried out with skill and determination. These moments remind me why I love what we do—helping people in their time of need, no matter how challenging the circumstances may be.
