In 2023, Flyability introduced the first specialized payload for its modular Elios 3 drone: the RAD. This innovative addition was developed in partnership with Mirion Technologies, a global leader in radiation detection, measurement, and monitoring solutions. The Elios 3 RAD enables operators to safely detect, locate, and measure radiation levels from a secure distance, making it an essential tool in high-risk environments.

Later that year, Flyability joined forces with Foretec to showcase the Elios 3 RAD at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, France. Held from November 28 to 30, the event attracted over 20,000 attendees focused on addressing the challenges of nuclear energy and environmental safety. Among many groundbreaking projects, the Elios 3 RAD stood out and was honored with the Nuclear Safety Innovation Award by a panel of five judges. This award recognizes innovations that enhance or maintain the integrity of systems involving radioactive materials, ultimately protecting people and the environment. The winning solution is not limited to nuclear facilities but can also apply to logistics, manufacturing, and waste management related to nuclear energy. The Elios 3 RAD has already proven its value in real-world applications. It has been used to inspect an irradiated vault for the U.S. Department of Energy and is currently being tested at Sellafield, the UK’s largest nuclear waste site. Over 80% of U.S. nuclear power plants are now equipped with Elios drones, highlighting their growing importance in the industry. Looking ahead, the Elios 3 RAD will play a key role in enhancing safety protocols and improving data collection in nuclear environments.
