In 2023, Flyability introduced a groundbreaking addition to its modular Elios 3 drone: the RAD payload. Developed in partnership with Mirion Technologies, a global leader in radiation detection and monitoring solutions, the Elios 3 RAD is designed to detect, locate, and measure radiation levels from a safe distance. This innovation allows operators to stay out of harm’s way while still gathering critical data in high-risk environments.

Later that year, Flyability and its partner Foretec participated in the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, France, from November 28 to 30. The event attracted over 20,000 attendees focused on addressing the challenges of working with nuclear materials. Among the many innovative projects showcased, the Elios 3 RAD was recognized with the Nuclear Safety Innovation Award by a panel of five judges.
This award highlights solutions that enhance or maintain the integrity of systems, tools, and instruments containing radioactive material. It emphasizes safety for both people and the environment. The Elios 3 RAD was acknowledged not just for its use in nuclear facilities but also for its potential in logistics, manufacturing, and nuclear waste management.
The Elios 3 RAD has already made a significant impact globally. It has been used to inspect an irradiated vault for the U.S. Department of Energy and is currently being tested at Sellafield, the UK’s largest nuclear waste management site. With more than 80% of U.S. nuclear power plants now equipped with an Elios drone, the RAD is playing a vital role in improving safety and data collection.
