This morning, the Newport Township Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 35000 block of N. Mill Creek Road in Wadsworth. The residence, located far from the main road and practically backing up to I-94 just beyond the toll booth, presented quite a challenge due to its remote location.
Upon arrival, firefighters had difficulty spotting the flames until they navigated the lengthy driveway leading to the property. It was there that they discovered a large, two-story home engulfed in fire on the upper level. Unfortunately, the area lacks hydrants, prompting an immediate upgrade to a Box Alarm, followed by a second alarm not long after. One engine and a 75-foot quint managed to reach the driveway, initiating a relay operation from the street. Three portable tanks were deployed on the road to supply water to two engines feeding 5-inch hoses connected to the quint and the engine positioned in the driveway.
As the fire intensified, crews were forced to switch to a defensive strategy. Additional resources were brought in, including several hand lines and an aerial pipe. The extensive water requirements and the distance tenders had to travel to refill meant the alarm was escalated to a fourth alarm to bring in more tanker support.
Throughout the operation, numerous departments from both Illinois and Wisconsin were called upon to assist. From Illinois, departments like Newport Township, Wauconda, Round Lake, Zion, Antioch, Winthrop Harbor, Waukegan, Beach Park, Gurnee, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Grayslake, Richmond, McHenry Township, Countryside, Lake Villa, Fox Lake, and Lake Forest all contributed personnel and equipment. Wisconsin departments such as Bristol, Trevor, South Shore, Salem, Pleasant Prairie, Paris, Twin Lakes, and Somers also sent aid in the form of tenders and command staff.
Photographs captured by Larry Shapiro provide a vivid account of the devastation. Images show the upper level of the house nearly destroyed, with significant damage visible at the rear and from the front facade. Firefighters worked tirelessly, even within the confines of the garage, to combat the blaze.

The incident underscores the complexity and collaborative effort required when battling fires in isolated areas without nearby hydrant systems. It was a true testament to the dedication and teamwork displayed by all involved firefighting agencies.
