Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:
On a frigid morning, Firefighter/Paramedic Patrick King and Firefighter Anthony Lockhart—both tragically killed in a fire on February 11, 1998—were honored once again at the very location where they made the ultimate sacrifice. The fire broke out at the Beverly Tire Store, and its roof collapsed during the blaze. Today, that spot is transformed into a park named in their memory, featuring the dedication of the King Lockhart Memorial Statue.
Patrick King's widow, Gina, reflects deeply on that fateful night at 10615 South Western Avenue. "It feels like it was just last month," she shared, her voice carrying the weight of time that hasn't quite eased her pain. She still wears a necklace adorned with a miniature replica of her late husband's badge, number 1407, a constant reminder of his service and sacrifice.
The accompanying photo captures the solemn dedication ceremony, taken by Jose M. Osorio for the Chicago Tribune. The image shows the park, a serene space filled with walking paths, benches, and two bronze boots marking the exact spots where each firefighter's body was discovered.
Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago emphasized the bittersweet nature of the day. "This statue and this park serve as reminders that even with the best training and equipment, danger lurks in our line of work. It’s a perilous job, and while we aim for everyone to return home safe, sometimes it doesn’t happen. Many sites across the city bear witness to fallen firefighters, but this one stands out because it has been transformed into a place of remembrance."
Reverend Thomas Mulcrone, chaplain of the Chicago Fire Department, offered a poignant reflection on the statue's significance. "This sculpture by Marshall Svendsen isn’t just about these two brave individuals; it represents the essence of firefighters and paramedics everywhere. Their work is selfless, focused on helping others rather than themselves."
As I write this, the cold air seems to echo the memories of those who gave their lives for their community. The park stands as both a tribute and a quiet promise—a testament to the courage of those who protect us every day.
Thanks, Dan.
