Today, Autodesk has released an updated version of its Revit software, designed for Building Information Modeling (BIM), exclusively for Maintenance Subscription and Desktop Subscription customers*. This new iteration, Autodesk Revit 2015 R2, brings over 30 features requested by users, enhancing both power and efficiency while improving productivity for architects, MEP engineers, and structural engineers alike.
In response to customer feedback, this R2 release delivers significant value to Subscription customers by providing them with access to cutting-edge Revit technology. As Jim Lynch, Vice President of Building and Collaboration Products at Autodesk, stated, "Our customers are always looking for ways to boost productivity and capability from the tools they depend on to meet their business needs. With this update, we aim to support these goals by offering the latest advancements from Autodesk."
Coinciding with this release, Autodesk is also fulfilling another long-standing customer request by integrating site planning tools into Revit. The newly launched Site Designer Extension for Revit® 2015 software, available through the Autodesk Exchange store to selected Subscription customers**, stems from Autodesk's acquisition of the former SiteWorks software from Eagle Point Software Corporation.
The Site Designer tool empowers architects, designers, and planners to mold terrain for construction sites directly within the Revit environment, ensuring seamless integration of the site design into the broader building model. Features include modeling alternatives for mass grading, building pads, streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and retaining walls—all within Revit. The extension automatically updates the underlying topographic surface, creating rich context models that can be shared between Revit and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® via Land XML files, fostering enhanced collaboration between architects and engineers. Performance optimizations in Revit R2 accelerate the editing and regeneration of intricate site design components.
Last month, Autodesk offered a sneak peek at these new functionalities through the "Revit Sundial" hosted preview. Revit 2015 R2 is essentially a Subscription-exclusive release of this preview. Users who tried the preview version were highly impressed, particularly noting the remarkable speed in drawing and regenerating data-heavy views.
Fully backward-compatible with existing Revit 2015 versions, R2 maintains the same file format and installs without interrupting ongoing projects.
Among the new capabilities introduced in R2:
**Power**:
- Explore energy performance insights through custom dashboards in Project Solon, accessible via the Result and Compare dialog.
- Utilize geometry from linked IFC models as references for dimensions, alignment, snapping, and hosting certain families in a Revit model.
- Debug models more effectively with the Reveal Constraints mode, which highlights all dimension and alignment constraints in a view.
- Experiment with visual programming using the open-source Dynamo interface for computational design, now included automatically with Revit.
**Performance**:
- Enhance the efficiency of editing and regenerating complex topographic surfaces, subregions, and building pads created using the new Site Builder Extension.
- Optimize the energy analytical model in Revit, reducing memory usage when handling large-scale models.
- Experience faster rendering and updates for views containing multiple family instances.
- Enjoy quicker display of Revit links within views.
**Productivity**:
- Work efficiently in perspective views, making swift adjustments without switching between different views.
- Save time by editing 'wall join' behaviors with a single click.
- Locate content faster using search capabilities in the Type Selector.
- Navigate PDF exports from Revit more swiftly with hyperlinked views.
With each new Revit release, the development team focuses on refining the user experience for BIM software. "Given the abundance of new features in Revit, we’re thrilled to place this additional value into the hands of our loyal Subscription customers," Jim Lynch remarked.
