In a recent development, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District Trustees have officially signed an agreement with Paramedic Services of Illinois (PSI), based in Schiller Park, to supply the district with 33 full-time firefighter/paramedics once they start operating independently on January 1, 2014. This move was formalized during a special meeting held on September 5, allowing Fire Chief/Administrator Jeff Swanson to collaborate closely with PSI to fully staff the district's Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington fire stations. During this meeting, trustees also initiated talks with PSI regarding potential plans to boost staffing levels further through additional part-time personnel.
The recruitment process is expected to commence in October, followed by firefighter training sessions beginning in early November. It's worth noting that all District firefighter/paramedics will technically be employed by PSI but will report directly to Chief Swanson. According to the staffing agreement, PSI will prioritize hiring Barrington firefighters who wish to continue their careers with the BCFPD post-layoff in December. These firefighters will retain identical salaries and paid time-off benefits as they enjoyed while working for the village. Furthermore, they’ll have the chance to advance into officer roles within the new department.
There was some delay in finalizing the PSI contract due to the village withholding the names of the soon-to-be-laid-off firefighters, making it challenging for the district and the affected firefighters to prepare adequately. Fire Chief Swanson expressed his hope that the village would release these names promptly, giving the impacted firefighters sufficient time to apply for positions within the district.
In related news, the BCFPD trustees received strong backing from several local elected officials representing Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, North Barrington, South Barrington, Barrington, and Cuba Townships, along with Lake County. Their letter praised the trustees' decision to partner with PSI, emphasizing that this arrangement ensures access to highly qualified and experienced personnel—including those potentially displaced by the village's workforce reductions—to serve all district residents.
With the PSI agreement now concluded, the board will turn its attention toward finalizing a timeline for dividing shared apparatus and equipment between the district and the village of Barrington. Depending on how these assets are allocated, trustees might explore supplementary equipment purchases to enhance operational capabilities.
