Excerpts from a Daily Herald article:

Buffalo Grove Fire Chief Terry Vavra is stepping down after nearly seven years leading the village’s fire department, according to officials who announced his retirement on Monday. With 39 years of experience in firefighting, Vavra joined Buffalo Grove in 2008 after serving 28 years with the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District, where he retired as deputy chief.

During his time in Buffalo Grove, Vavra played a key role in negotiating two labor agreements and introduced a structured process for testing battalion chiefs. He also served on the Lake County Fire Chiefs Board for five years, including a term as board chair. In addition to his leadership, Vavra has contributed to the field by teaching firefighter safety courses and writing articles for industry publications.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael Baker will take over as interim fire chief while the village searches for Vavra’s permanent replacement. Vavra’s final day at work is scheduled for this Friday.

Thanks, Dan

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

Buffalo Grove is saying goodbye to its fire chief, Terrance “Terry” Vavra, who will officially step down on February 13. Vavra made the announcement on February 9, stating that while it was a tough decision, he felt it was time to move in a new direction.

Vavra spent 28 years with the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District before retiring as deputy chief. Rather than taking a traditional retirement, he took on the role of fire chief in Buffalo Grove in March 2008. According to Vavra, his tenure as a chief typically lasts about seven years, which aligns with his upcoming departure.

When asked what he plans to do next, Vavra said, “I’m told I have a wife, who I haven’t seen much of in the past seven years, and I want to spend more time with my granddaughter.” He also hinted that he may continue to travel and teach in the future, suggesting that his career in the fire service might not be over yet.

Village Manager Dane Bragg is now tasked with finding Vavra’s replacement. Bragg, who has been in his role since 2010, has already brought in new leaders for the police and public works departments, as well as a new deputy village manager and a community development director. He recently created a new position last year, showing his commitment to reshaping the village's leadership structure.
