The Maywood Fire Department responded to a 3-alarm fire at 326 Randolph in Oak Park this morning around 9:00 AM. The incident began when contractors working on a vacant four-story building reported an accident involving a torch near the cockloft of one of the five buildings in the complex. As the fire spread rapidly through the attic space, it eventually caused sections of the roof to collapse. Firefighters from Maywood, supported by mutual aid from Melrose Park, Westchester, and Forest Park, worked tirelessly to control the blaze. Aerial units from Maywood and Melrose Park, along with ground-based hand lines, were deployed to tackle the fire from multiple angles. Several engines supplied water to the scene, including units from Stone Park, River Forest, Bellwood, Berkley, and two from Maywood itself. One of the most dramatic moments came when the fire broke through the roof, forcing firefighters to reposition their streams and adjust their tactics. Contractors on-site also alerted crews that there were several propane tanks and two Bobcat Skid-Steer loaders inside the building, adding to the complexity of the operation. Photos from the scene show firefighters using the Bronto Skylift, working from the tip of Truck 502 to access the cockloft, and directing master streams from aerial ladders. The fire was eventually contained to the original building, and by noon, the 3-11 alarm was called off.
