This message is from Eric Haak:

On Saturday, November 30th, just before 9:00 a.m., the Chicago Fire Department's Main Fire Alarm Office received a call about someone in the water at the Humboldt Park Lagoon. Squad 2 was returning from a working fire and was being dispatched when they were informed it was actually an overzealous dog that had chased a group of geese, not a person. Battalion 12 and Engine 57 arrived on scene along with Truck 36, and confirmed that a dog was about 25 feet from shore in roughly 5 feet of water, according to online fishing depth charts. Squad 2 had already suited up and rushed to the location. As one of their members prepared to lasso the dog with a life preserver, the dog decided to swim toward the firefighter instead. At that moment, the firefighter abandoned the life preserver and grabbed the dog by the collar. For a brief second, the dog’s weight cracked the ice, nearly pulling the firefighter into the freezing water. But the dog was quickly secured, lifted out, and taken back to its owner. The dog looked a bit embarrassed as it climbed into a CPD squad car, which then took the owner and her pet home.
