The Spring Grove Fire Protection District in McHenry County recently received an early delivery of their new pumper/tanker from Toyne, based in Breda, Iowa. This new unit, Engine 1844, replaces older equipment that has served the department for decades. The vehicle features an HME 1871 Spectr cab and a tandem axle chassis with a long body and raised roof to accommodate an enclosed, top-mounted pump panel. It's set to replace a 1985 Ford C-Series Pierce 1250/1000 engine and a 1980 GMC 7000/US Tanker 2,200-gallon tanker.

This modern pumper/tanker is equipped with a 1,500 GPM pump and comes with a 3,000-gallon water tank and a 40-gallon foam tank. The long body includes high-side compartments on both sides, allowing access to ladders and the portable tank via overhead hydraulic storage racks. This design improves efficiency and accessibility during emergency operations.

One unique feature of Engine 1844 is its extendable chutes located just behind the pump module, allowing water to be discharged into a portable tank. Unlike traditional tankers, there’s no rear chute, which makes the system more compact and efficient for certain types of operations. Both sides have similar chutes, providing flexibility depending on the situation.

The rear of the unit features clear NFPA-compliant chevron striping, ensuring visibility and compliance with safety standards. With its modern design, advanced equipment, and thoughtful layout, Engine 1844 represents a significant upgrade for the Spring Grove Fire Department, helping them serve their community more effectively and safely.
