This is from Eric Haak:
Shortly before 0900 hours on Saturday, November 30th, the Chicago Main Fire Alarm Office received a call about someone in the water at the Humboldt Park Lagoon. Squad 2 was returning from a working fire when they were dispatched for the incident. However, as they were en route, they were informed it was actually an overzealous dog that had chased a group of geese, not a person.
Battalion 12 and Engine 57 arrived first, along with Truck 36, and confirmed the situation: a dog was about 25 feet from shore in roughly 5 feet of water, based on online fishing depth charts. Squad 2 quickly suited up and made their way to the scene. As one firefighter prepared to use a life preserver to lasso the dog, the animal suddenly swam toward the rescuer.
At that moment, the firefighter abandoned the life preserver and grabbed the dog by the collar. The dog’s weight briefly broke the ice, nearly pulling the firefighter into the freezing water. But with quick action, the dog was secured, lifted out of the water, and taken back to its owner. The dog looked a bit sheepish as it climbed into a CPD squad car, which then took the owner and her pet home.
It was a funny yet heartwarming scene, showing how even in cold weather, firefighters are always ready to help—whether it's people or pets.
