The Long Range Ultra Short Baseline (LR-USBL) system is a cutting-edge underwater positioning technology designed to track and communicate with submerged targets such as AUVs and UUVs, operating at depths of up to 4 kilometers. This advanced stereo positioning system has been developed to provide accurate, real-time location data for dynamic underwater objects.
From May 20th to May 24th, 2006, the "Long-Range Ultra-Short Baseline Positioning System" project, part of China's 863 Program under the Marine Resources Development Technology Theme, achieved a major milestone. It marked the first deployment of such a system in the South China Sea, successfully completing deep-sea testing.
Developed jointly by Harbin Engineering University and the State Oceanic Administration, the system overcame significant technical challenges over nearly four years of research and development. Innovations included high-precision time measurement for direction finding, advanced underwater acoustic transducer arrays, complex signal encoding, long-range acoustic communication, and robust digital signal processing hardware and software. The system now holds independent intellectual property rights.
During testing, the equipment proved to be stable and reliable. With a working depth exceeding 3,700 meters and a range of 8.6 kilometers, it offers dynamic tracking of underwater targets with a positioning accuracy of 0.2–0.3% of the slant range—surpassing all set performance benchmarks and reaching international standards.
The LR-USBL system stands out for its compact design, high precision, and ease of use. It is ideal for a wide range of applications, including deep-sea resource surveys, ocean exploration, underwater engineering operations, and more. By establishing a high-precision three-dimensional positioning system in China, this technology provides essential tools for deep-sea operations and high-accuracy underwater positioning tasks.
