The Courier-News recently published a story about the East Dundee Fire Protection District officially starting construction on its new fire station, marking a significant milestone for the community.
EAST DUNDEE — Mark Guth was just 13 years old when the original fire station was built on Third Street in downtown East Dundee over 60 years ago. At the time, his father was part of the local fire department. Now 75, Guth is retired from firefighting and currently serves as president of the East Dundee Fire Protection District Board of Trustees.
On Tuesday, Guth joined fellow trustees, village officials, firefighters, and residents to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the new station. The event was filled with excitement and nostalgia, as many in attendance reflected on the history of the fire department and the importance of this new chapter.
"Today’s the day, finally," said Fire Chief Steve Schmitendorf. "It’s very exciting. It’s something that’s been a dream for a long time." The chief emphasized that the new station will better serve the growing needs of the district.
The project was made possible by a $5.5 million referendum approved by voters in November. The new facility will be located near Routes 25 and 72, which officials say is a more central location for covering the entire district — stretching east to Higgins Road and Interstate 90.
To ensure fairness in the land exchange, East Dundee officials agreed to provide the fire district with an annual $100,000 contribution for 20 years. This payment will help offset bond payments for the new station, which is expected to take around 10 months to complete.
The East Dundee Fire Protection District serves not only the villages of East Dundee, South Barrington, and Barrington Hills, but also unincorporated areas of Kane and Cook counties. With this new station, the department aims to enhance emergency response times and improve service quality for all residents.
