Around 4:40 AM on the morning of June 27th, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department in MABAS Division 12 received an urgent call from a homeowner on Dawes Avenue reporting that their house was engulfed in flames. The residence was located in the 500 block, and the homeowner had managed to evacuate safely with their family, escaping through the lower-level rear double doors.
By the time Stephen Wilcox arrived, firefighters were already on the scene, battling the intense blaze. He provided detailed updates and shared several photos, capturing the dramatic moments of the firefighting efforts. Stephen noted that the fire initially erupted near a cooking pit where propane tanks had been stored. Tragically, all three tanks exploded, significantly fueling the rapid spread of the fire.
When Stephen first approached the property, he observed the devastating impact on the rear of the house. The double sliding glass doors in the lower level were completely engulfed, and the attached deck was fully ablaze. As he moved further around the structure, he emphasized the critical importance of conducting a 360-degree assessment during emergencies. This particular fire originated between the steps and the double-door entrance, making a thorough inspection crucial for understanding the situation fully.
Firefighters initially tackled the inferno using two-and-a-half-inch hand lines to suppress the flames. However, due to limited water pressure—caused by the area's four-inch water mains—they had to carefully manage their resources. Eventually, the decision was made to deploy the tower ladder to access the roof and attic areas, which were rapidly deteriorating. Unfortunately, both the roof and the second floor eventually collapsed during the operation.
By sunrise, the extent of the destruction became increasingly apparent. While the first-floor and basement areas were largely under control, the attic and roof continued to burn fiercely. Despite these challenges, the firefighters remained steadfast, working tirelessly to bring the situation under control. Stephen’s photographs captured not only the intensity of the fire but also the teamwork and determination displayed by the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department.
Reflecting on the incident, Stephen highlighted the critical role played by the firefighters who risked their lives to protect the home and its occupants. Their swift response and strategic approach undoubtedly prevented further escalation of the disaster. As the community woke up to the aftermath, it served as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable nature of fires and the vital importance of vigilance and preparedness.
