Mercedes-Benz models will be fully stopped once domestic production is realized

On July 9, the Beijing Benz engine plant laid the foundation stone in Yizhuang. Two years later, Mercedes-Benz will start production of its first engine plant outside Germany. The construction of the new engine plant is a major breakthrough for Beijing Benz in the core technology field. In the interview with the reporter, Beiqi Group Chairman and Beijing Benz Chairman Xu Heyi revealed that BAIC and Daimler have reached an agreement that once the Mercedes-Benz models are domesticated, imports will stop.

At present, Mercedes-Benz products are rear-wheel drive. In order to adapt to energy saving and adapt to miniaturization, Mercedes-Benz plans to develop a new compact compact model, code-named "MFA," which will be listed at the same time in Beijing and Germany. The traditional rear-drive luxury cars will also be launched with new products, codenamed "MRA". Xu Heyi revealed that there are four types of future product plans for Beijing Benz, namely: Forerunners, Rear-wheel Drives, Off-road and New Energy. Beijing Benz will expand on compact cars and SUVs on the basis of existing C-class and E-class sedans. From this year to 2015, Beijing Benz will launch a new model every year.

The pure electric version of Mercedes-Benz plans to go offline in Beijing in 2014. Xu Heyi said that BAIC and Daimler are still negotiating recently and the time for the downline is likely to be advanced. During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, Mercedes-Benz new energy vehicles will be able to mass produce in Beijing.

At present, Mercedes-Benz's sales channels in China are authorized by Mercedes-Benz China and Beijing Benz. Although sales terminals are unified, they each have a sales system. In order to avoid the Beijing Mercedes-Benz and the imported models “getting in the same room,” Xu Heyi revealed that the Beijing Automotive Group and Daimler reached an agreement that once the products are made domestically, imports will stop. "In the future, there will be no case of the same product fighting in the domestic market."

The new engine plant is scheduled to be put into production in early 2013. The production capacity for the first phase will reach 250,000, mainly producing three kinds of gasoline engines of 1.6, 2.0, and 3.0 liters, and some of them will be divided into four-cylinder and six-cylinder series, including camshafts. The five key components of the engine, including the connecting rod, will all be domestically produced. These engines will be installed on all products of Beijing Benz. Some 3.0-liter engine products will also be supplied to Mercedes-Benz joint ventures in Fujian. “These three displacement engines are the most advanced engines currently used by Daimler, not the old ones.” Xu Heyi believes that taking the most core engine to China to produce shows the height of Daimler's Chinese market. “The engine factory is of great significance to Beijing Benz, but the introduction is also very difficult. BAIC has been negotiating for four or five years, and has experienced many difficulties. After the foundation and construction of the engine plant, Beijing Benz will usher in a series of major investment projects. Among the projects that have been announced so far, the first to be completed will be the R&D center, and it is expected to be put into use at the end of 2012. Xu Heyi said that the R&D center's plan has been formally determined and the design work is currently underway.

Xu Heyi has high hopes for the Beijing Mercedes-Benz R&D center that is under preparation. He said that after the R&D center is completed, it will assume the Mercedes-Benz localization adaptability improvement and component inspection. The second step is to realize the replacement of models. "It is a matter of time before the vehicle is developed," Xu said.
