Two researchers from the Clemson University in the United States received $ 3.2 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Defense for the research and development of military laser weapon systems to meet the needs of actual battlefield applications. The two researchers, John Ballato and Lin Zhu, respectively, are currently experimenting with different approaches to improve the beam quality of high-power semiconductor lasers.

John Ballato focuses on improving light performance and is looking for fiber optic materials that will not lower the laser. At present, optical fibers meeting the basic performance requirements have been manufactured and will continue to be optimized to meet the requirements of next-generation high-power laser systems. And Lin Zhu is more focused on improving the pumping efficiency of the laser, and then create a very directional laser beam. Although their project is separate, but the laser power is actively trying to upgrade. This will also promote the application of high-power lasers, both in the military and in the industrial arena.
