Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are developing a new type of wearable device that turns a user's thumbnail into a miniature wireless tracking board. They envision that this technology allows users to control wireless devices and pick up the phone when they are too busy. A graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao, said: "This is very compelling. When I turn this into a part of my body, I have the ability to take it off, so you can still control it, but It allows this kind of close connection to your body.” The device can communicate subtly where it is needed, such as sending quick texts to a child while attending an important meeting.
According to Kao, the device's inspiration comes from color stickers, and some women apply nails. The researchers assumed that a commercial version of the device will have a removable membrane surface so that users can coordinate the surface pattern with their clothes. It is easy to access other fingers even when the user is holding some of his or her hands. For their initial prototype, the researchers built their own sensors by printing copper electrodes on flexible polyester. The researchers said that it takes two or three seconds to touch the operator's finger on the surface to prevent inadvertent activation and deactivation.
