Recently, MySuburbanLife.com shared a touching story about how Geneva firefighters came together to support a local veteran. It’s an inspiring example of community spirit and generosity.
U.S. Army Specialist Joshua Kerber is set to become the first recipient of a car gifted by the Associated Firefighters of Illinois Geneva Local 4287. Kerber, 26, from West Chicago, lost his left arm while serving in Afghanistan back in 2009. During a recent meeting with the Geneva City Council, he opened up about his experiences.
“I joined the Army in 2008 because I felt stuck in my civilian job,†Kerber explained. “I knew I needed more education, but it was out of reach financially. The military had always been something I considered, and with family members who’d served, it seemed like the right choice.â€
Tragedy struck one night in Afghanistan during a routine security mission. His convoy was ambushed with rocket-propelled grenades. “I got hit twice,†Kerber recounted. “The first time, I managed to get back up and fight back. But the second hit—well, that was it. I’m still dealing with shrapnel throughout my body, and my right arm took some damage, though thankfully without any nerve issues. As for the left arm… well, it wasn’t much use to begin with.â€
Kerber stood alongside Geneva firefighters Kevin Swanson, Rod Johnson, and Dave Lentz, each proudly wearing a sample of the black T-shirts they’ve designed to raise funds for their initiative. Rod Johnson, the local union's vice president, elaborated on their efforts. “The Warrior Program has been active across Illinois for about six years now, donating vehicles to seven wounded veterans so far. We decided early on that we weren’t just going to sell a few shirts; we wanted to raise $30,000 and make a real difference.â€
The group partnered with businesses like the Kane County Cougars, Firehouse Pizza and Grill, and Old Towne Pub in Geneva to sell these T-shirts at $20 each. So far, they’ve sold approximately 2,500 shirts, with all proceeds going directly toward purchasing the vehicle. Other fire departments such as West Chicago Local 3970, Batavia Local 3436, Elburn Local 4749, and St. Charles Local 3322 have also been involved in the project.
“Josh picked out a brand-new 2014 red Ford F-150,†Johnson continued. “Fox Valley Ford gave us an incredible deal on it, and we’ll finalize the purchase this week.â€
To celebrate, Kerber will throw out the first pitch at Fifth Third Ballpark on Friday. Afterward, the vehicle will be handed over to him on the field, followed by the usual post-game fireworks display.
Thanks for sharing this heartwarming story, Dan. It really shows how communities can come together to help those who’ve sacrificed so much for us.
