Hey there,
So I just came across this really inspiring story on MySuburbanLife.com about how the firefighters from Geneva are stepping up to help a deserving veteran. U.S. Army Specialist Joshua Kerber is set to receive a car gifted by the Associated Firefighters of Illinois Geneva Local 4287. Kerber, 26, from West Chicago, lost his left arm in Afghanistan back in 2009. During a city council meeting, he shared parts of his journey, and it’s nothing short of incredible.
Kerber explained that he joined the Army in 2008 because he felt the need for an education and a better future. “I looked around at my job prospects and realized I couldn’t afford college. The Army seemed like a good option, especially since family members had served,†he said.
Tragedy struck one night in Afghanistan while he was serving as a gunner in a convoy that got ambushed. “It was just another night, you know? But then everything changed,†Kerber recalled. His vehicle took hits from rocket-propelled grenades. “I went down, tried to get back up but couldn’t. Shrapnel is all over me, and my right arm got injured too, though thankfully there’s no nerve damage. As for my left arm… well, it wasn’t exactly functional even before.â€
Surrounded by support from Geneva firefighters—Kevin Swanson, Rod Johnson (who’s also the local’s vice president), and Dave Lentz—each proudly wearing black T-shirts promoting their fundraising initiative, Kerber shared his story.
Johnson mentioned that the Warrior Program has been running statewide for around six years now, gifting seven vehicles to wounded Illinois veterans. “When we started this program in June, we weren’t just aiming to sell a few shirts. Our goal was to raise $30,000 and give someone a car,†Johnson explained. They’ve partnered with local businesses like the Kane County Cougars, Firehouse Pizza and Grill, and events at Old Towne Pub in Geneva. So far, they’ve sold about 2,500 shirts at $20 each, ensuring every penny goes toward purchasing the vehicle.
Other fire departments such as West Chicago Local 3970, Batavia Local 3436, Elburn Local 4749, and St. Charles Local 3322 have joined in the effort too.
For Kerber, the team chose a brand-new 2014 red Ford F-150. Fox Valley Ford gave them a fantastic deal on it, and they plan to finalize the purchase soon. To celebrate, Kerber will throw out the first pitch at the Fifth Third Ball Park on Friday. Afterward, the car will be handed over to him on the field before the fireworks show.
It’s amazing to see how communities can come together like this to make a real difference. Hats off to everyone involved!
Thanks for sharing, Dan.
