Digital transformation is breaking down barriers one by one—and with enhanced collaboration comes bigger challenges. Questions like: Can owners and operators optimize their assets today while cutting future costs? Can design and engineering teams share data without compromising intellectual property? Can electrical engineers adopt new tools and workflows to design for a renewable energy future?
The answers to these big questions are yes. At Autodesk University (AU) 2022, we unveiled advancements that will enhance collaboration and streamline workflows across the teams designing, constructing, and managing the built environment. Let's dive deeper.
First, we're extending the value of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to facility owners and operators. This year, we're taking the digital twin capabilities of Autodesk Tandem to the next level by integrating it into facility monitoring systems. Customers can now connect Tandem to operational systems and data, creating a digital twin that offers insights to lower costs and improve occupant experiences. For instance, Tandem will be able to interface with building management systems and environmental sensors to monitor energy consumption patterns continuously. This data can guide decisions that optimize energy savings without affecting occupant comfort.
The public beta for Tandem Facility Monitoring will be available soon.
Next, we’ve joined forces with iOffice + SpaceIQ to bring together BIM insights and asset operations under one unified digital management solution. The integration of Archibus, iOffice + SpaceIQ’s IWMS software, with the Autodesk AEC Collection Bundle ensures centralized data management. This allows building owners and operators to extract more value from their BIM data, leveraging design and construction data for operational insights and vice versa for future design considerations. This partnership strengthens Autodesk’s capabilities in operational building management, providing better support throughout the building lifecycle.
In the water industry, we're introducing Info360 Plant, a cloud-based operational analytics platform specifically designed for water and wastewater treatment facilities. Built by water experts, Info360 Plant provides real-time, actionable analysis to address operational challenges and improve sustainability. It helps plant operations teams reduce carbon footprints, manage risks, cut operating expenses, ensure compliance, and justify facility upgrades—all supported by data-driven insights.
Collaboration in the cloud is another area where we’re making strides. Autodesk BIM Collaborate Pro facilitates seamless anytime, anywhere collaboration for design teams, enhancing coordination with construction partners and clients. However, data sharing needs boundaries to protect intellectual property. Using the Bridge tool in Autodesk Construction Cloud, engineers can now control what they share across projects and accounts. Bridge enables cross-account collaboration, allowing firms to keep their project information in their own accounts while sharing it securely. This level of control prevents premature access by external stakeholders and minimizes errors, reducing project risk.
For civil engineers, we’re enhancing data management and collaboration through the Desktop Connector, which allows quicker access to Civil 3D project data from any web browser or local machine. When ready to generate deliverables, users can now create Civil 3D and AutoCAD sheet sets directly from the cloud using the improved Sheet Set Manager. This tool streamlines documentation management, enabling users to edit, reorder, and adjust sheets more efficiently. Enhanced collaboration features let users publish to PDF and share drawings with external stakeholders directly from the cloud.
Communication hiccups between office and field teams can lead to costly inefficiencies, resulting in billions of dollars in annual rework expenses in the U.S. alone. The PlanGrid Build mobile app bridges this gap, ensuring project teams always have the latest information. Teams using Autodesk BIM Collaborate Pro and Autodesk Docs can navigate 3D models, track issue statuses, and access updated project info all in one place. With the new AutoCAD Web subscription, field teams can review designs from their laptops or mobile devices. They can also collaborate with the office via the Trace feature, which lets users add feedback to DWG files without altering the original drawings. This mobile and web support keeps teams synchronized, no matter their location.
Sustainability remains a top priority, driving innovation in energy design. By 2040, 40% of global energy will come from renewable sources. To meet this demand, Autodesk partnered with Schneider Electric to develop an electrical engineering design solution integrated with Revit. This tool simplifies electrical design, analysis, and equipment sizing within a single BIM platform, enhancing efficiency and accuracy. Engineers can now work in one environment to meet regional standards, reduce repetitive data entry, and generate automated reports—all while dynamically linking diagrams. This comprehensive workflow reduces waste, shortens project timelines, controls costs, and boosts energy efficiency.
These innovations collectively empower our customers to plan, design, construct, and operate a more sustainable future. Explore more AEC updates from AU 2022:
- Autodesk launched a new AEC industry cloud called Forma, unifying BIM workflows across teams involved in the built environment. The initial offering will help customers extend the BIM process into planning and early-stage design.
- Autodesk announced a strategic collaboration with Epic Games to accelerate immersive real-time experiences, starting with Epic’s Twinmotion for Autodesk Revit.
This communication includes forward-looking statements regarding planned developments for our products and services. These statements reflect our current plans, which may change. Purchasing decisions should not be based solely on these statements. For more details, see Autodesk’s Terms of Use.
