In a recent interview, a reporter spoke with an automotive industry expert during the opening ceremony of WABCO's Qingdao manufacturing facility. The expert is currently leading a team conducting on-site inspections to ensure production consistency among vehicle manufacturers in a specific region. He revealed that starting from the second half of this year, the country initiated a comprehensive production consistency check for commercial vehicles, and the findings were "shocking."
According to reports, this inspection process was carried out under the requirements set by the National Development and Reform Commission. A group of industry experts, along with local manufacturers, conducted on-site evaluations of products and production practices. During the review of refitted vehicles, the focus was primarily on components related to commercial vehicle safety—such as ABS systems, reflective signs, and driving recorders. In particular, the expert team closely examined trailer manufacturers based on data they had collected.
They discovered that only 16% of trailers produced by certain companies were equipped with ABS, which raised serious concerns. The expert emphasized that the inspection was thorough, not only visiting production sites but also checking the origins of key components. For example, when inspecting ABS installations, they reviewed warehouse records and delivery documents. Some experts even went beneath the chassis to verify the actual presence of the system, regardless of the vehicle’s age.
This level of scrutiny ensured that the inspection results were accurate, revealing that some domestic manufacturers were not adhering to national standards. Their production data did not match the information provided in the National Development and Reform Commission’s announcements. This inconsistency poses a significant risk to road safety.
Despite existing national regulations, such as GB 7258-2004, which mandates safety features like side and rear protection devices, ABS, and reflective signs for commercial vehicles, many manufacturers fail to comply in practice. Especially in the case of trailers, some companies claim their models are equipped with ABS in official announcements, yet these features are absent in mass production.
The regulation also states that semi-trailer tractors, classified as heavy trucks, must be fully equipped with ABS. However, the implementation of these standards remains unsatisfactory, particularly for trailers. Many do not meet the required safety criteria, raising concerns about potential hazards.
Experts warn that the lack of compliance with production consistency is a critical issue. Production consistency is essential for product quality and safety, and it starts with the manufacturer’s responsibility. Companies must have proper management systems in place to ensure that what they produce aligns with approved models. If not, government authorities should conduct regular inspections and impose penalties when inconsistencies are found.
