The Courier-News recently published a story about the East Dundee Fire Protection District officially starting construction on a brand-new fire station, marking a major milestone for the community.

EAST DUNDEE — Mark Guth, now 75, remembers the day the old fire station was built on Third Street in downtown East Dundee. He was just 13 years old at the time, and his father was part of the fire department. Today, Guth serves as the president of the East Dundee Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, having retired from firefighting after a long career.

On Tuesday, Guth joined local officials, firefighters, and residents to break ground on the new facility, which has been years in the making. Fire Chief Steve Schmitendorf expressed his excitement, saying, “Today’s the day, finally. It’s very exciting. It’s something that’s been a dream for a long time.”

The project, funded by a $5.5 million referendum approved by voters in November, will see the new station built near Routes 25 and 72. Officials believe this location is more central to serve the entire district, which stretches as far east as Higgins Road and Interstate 90.

To ensure fairness, the village of East Dundee, which provided three acres of land with an existing building, will contribute $100,000 annually to the fire district for 20 years. This contribution will help offset bond payments for the new station.

Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months, with the goal of opening the new station in time to better serve the growing needs of the communities it protects. The fire district covers East Dundee, South Barrington, Barrington Hills, and parts of Kane and Cook counties.
