Excerpts from the Journal-Topics.com:
Mount Prospect's Deputy Fire Chief Brian Lambel is set to take over as the village’s acting fire chief starting October 1, following the retirement of Fire Chief John Malcolm on October 9. Lambel, 46, has served with the department for nearly 16 years and was recently promoted to deputy chief in early June. His new role will be temporary until a permanent decision is made.
Malcolm is moving to a fire chief position in Lake Zurich, a suburb northwest of Mount Prospect. According to Acting Village Manager David Strahl, the village will assess Lambel’s performance during his interim tenure before deciding whether he should remain in the leadership role permanently.
With Lambel’s promotion, Lieutenant John Dolan will step into the deputy chief position, which may also be temporary. Dolan, 53, has been with the department for 19 years and will begin his new duties the week of October 5.
Lambel and Malcolm have already started working together to ensure a smooth transition. “We’re making sure everything runs smoothly during this time,†said Lambel. He added that the next three months of 2015 will be busy for both him and the department.
The fire department is currently hiring six new firefighters through the SAFER grant program, which will allow Engine 13 at the downtown station to return to service. The department is also in the process of promoting new lieutenants.
Lambel and Dolan recently met to develop new goals and a strategic plan for the department. “One of our main focuses will be on training, education, and empowering our staff to take on more responsibilities while increasing accountability,†Lambel explained.
Another priority is the evaluation of the community risk reduction program, which helps identify local needs and how the department can better support residents and businesses to prevent injuries and damage. The department is also looking to reevaluate its operations, establish a solid succession plan, and prepare for future challenges in the evolving field of firefighting.
A retirement celebration for Malcolm is scheduled for October 9 at Fire Station 13 on Northwest Highway. A special resolution honoring his service will also be presented at the village board meeting on Tuesday, October 6.
