Choke manifold is an essential component used in well control operations to manage and regulate pressure during drilling or production. It plays a crucial role in controlling well kicks and preventing blowouts by allowing the controlled release of fluids from the wellbore. When the blowout preventer is closed, the choke valve can be adjusted to maintain a slight overbalance between the bottom hole pressure and formation pressure, thus preventing further influx of formation fluids into the well. Additionally, it enables a soft shut-in when the well is closed, and can also be used to relieve pressure and allow controlled flow when necessary, protecting the well integrity. The choke manifold typically consists of a choke valve, gate valve, piping, fittings, and pressure gauges. The choke valve comes in different types—manual, hydraulic, and positive—allowing operators to regulate the flow and manage casing pressure effectively.
