According to a report from the Detroit News, BMW Motors has said that it will recall 32,000 vehicles worldwide. The reason for the recall is that the electric auxiliary pumps of these vehicles have overheated and caught fire.
The recalled models involved the 2008-2011 BMW 5-series, 5-series Gran Turismo, 7-series, X5 SAV and X6 SAV models with 8-cylinder or 12-cylinder turbocharged engines.
The role of the auxiliary pump is to help reduce the temperature of the turbocharger while the vehicle is in motion, but when it fails, it will not be able to cool down. Instead, the circuit board will overheat and catch fire. Prior to this, BMW Motors found 102 auxiliary pump failure events worldwide, including two engine compartment fires. Fortunately, no casualties have been caused.
