LAS VEGAS – (BUSINESS WIRE) – At its annual user event, Autodesk University, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) unveiled a groundbreaking cloud-based platform tailored for the construction industry: Autodesk BIM 360 Docs. This innovative service offers a centralized digital workspace where teams can create, access, manage, annotate, and share 2D and 3D project documents, plans, and models in real time.
According to a 2013 report by Autodesk titled “Making the Grade,†up to 25% of construction work involves rework, and around 10% of materials are wasted. A major cause of this inefficiency is the cumbersome and error-prone process of managing hundreds or even thousands of project documents. The current landscape often forces construction professionals to juggle multiple document management tools, leading to confusion, delays, and costly mistakes.
Previously known as Project Alexandria, BIM 360 Docs aims to streamline workflows and reduce errors across construction projects. By ensuring that all team members are working from the most up-to-date and accurate documents, it helps eliminate miscommunication and unnecessary rework.
“A comprehensive solution like this has been long overdue,†said Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Products at Autodesk. “The industry has suffered from fragmented systems and outdated practices for too long. We’ve taken a proactive approach, combining our deep expertise with real-world insights to deliver something truly transformative.â€
BIM 360 Docs is designed to foster collaboration across all stages of a construction project. Key features include:
- A seamless integration of 3D and 2D views, allowing users to switch between model views and 2D drawings effortlessly.
- Role-based access control and approval workflows to ensure only the latest documents are used.
- High-speed viewing of large PDFs optimized for iOS devices.
- Automated organization of documents with advanced OCR for title blocks, making it easier to search and retrieve files.
Industry leaders, including designers, engineers, general contractors, and building owners, provided valuable input during the development of BIM 360 Docs, helping shape a tool that addresses real-world challenges.
“Document management has always been a pain point in construction,†said Jason Reece, Technology and Innovation Improvement Lead at Balfour Beatty Construction. “Many companies still rely on piecemeal solutions that don’t really solve the problem. BIM 360 Docs looks like it could be the real deal—something that finally brings true integration to the industry.â€
