LAS VEGAS – (BUSINESS WIRE) – At its annual user conference, Autodesk University, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK) introduced BIM 360 Docs, a cloud-based platform tailored for the construction industry. This innovative service offers a centralized digital workspace where teams can create, access, manage, annotate, and share both 2D and 3D project documents, plans, and models—all in one place.
According to a 2013 report by Autodesk titled “Making the Grade,†up to 25% of construction work is rework, and about 10% of materials go to waste. Much of this inefficiency stems from the complex and error-prone process of managing hundreds or even thousands of project documents. The current landscape involves multiple document management tools, leading to confusion, delays, and costly mistakes on job sites.
Previously known as Project Alexandria, BIM 360 Docs aims to streamline workflows, reduce errors, and save time across construction projects. It ensures that all team members are working with the most up-to-date versions of documents and plans, improving coordination and accuracy.
“Autodesk is reshaping how construction projects are managed,†said Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Products at Autodesk. “A complete solution like this has been long overdue. The industry has paid a heavy price in time and money for the lack of integration. We’ve identified the challenge, built the expertise, and now we’re delivering a major step forward for the sector.â€
BIM 360 Docs brings construction teams together through real-time collaboration, allowing them to access and work on documents throughout the entire project lifecycle. Key features include:
- Seamless integration between 2D and 3D views, enabling users to switch between model views and 2D drawings effortlessly;
- Secure, permission-based access and approval workflows to ensure only the latest versions are used;
- Fast and smooth viewing of large PDFs optimized for iOS devices;
- Automated organization of documents with advanced OCR for title blocks, ensuring accuracy and ease of use.
The development of BIM 360 Docs involved feedback from industry leaders, including architects, engineers, general contractors, and project owners. Their input helped shape the product into a more practical and user-friendly solution.
“Document management has always been a pain point in construction, but many still rely on fragmented systems that don’t truly solve the problem,†said Jason Reece, Technology and Innovation Improvement Lead at Balfour Beatty Construction. “We’ve worked closely with Autodesk during the development phase, and based on what we’ve seen so far, BIM 360 Docs is well on track to deliver a real, integrated solution for an issue that’s plagued the industry for years.â€
