Northbrook Civic Foundation honors Tim Olk

Tim Olk, a well-known photographer and regular contributor to chicagoareafire.com, was honored last Monday by the Northbrook Civic Foundation. He received the Civic Award in recognition of his long-standing dedication to the community where he has lived his entire life. Congratulations, Tim! According to excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com: Tim Olk was one of two recipients of the 2015 Northbrook Civic Award, presented by the Northbrook Civic Foundation. Along with seven other volunteers from the greater Northbrook area, he was recognized at the foundation’s annual meeting and awards dinner. As a professional fire scene photographer, Olk had spent the morning capturing images of firefighters hanging mourning bunting after a tragic incident. He also documented the processional honoring firefighter Daniel Capuano, who passed away while battling a fire earlier that day. Olk was nominated for the award by Deputy Chief Tim Smeltzer of the Northbrook Fire Department. Firefighters and Northbrook Fire Chief Jose Torres were present to support him, as he has been photographing fire scenes since his youth. “Tim is a selfless and giving individual,” said Chief Torres. “He’s not only known locally but also nationally for his contributions.” Tim photographs for over 50 fire departments across the Midwest, including Chicago and Northbrook. He was certified in the 1990s by the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal to document fire scenes. He has also supported the Northbrook Civic Foundation by capturing events like Northbrook Days, where he has volunteered since he was just 12 years old.
