The chairman of Shandong Longkou Pump Nozzle Factory believes that the development of oil-free systems in the European II standard has played a crucial role in saving China's oil nozzle industry. The Chinese machinery industry has long recognized that the engine sector has been a bottleneck for the automotive industry, while the pump industry has struggled to keep up with the demands of the engine sector. Established in 1980, Oil-Free was originally an affiliated research institute under the former Ministry of Machinery Industry. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it became the only oil-free research institution in the world based in China. Its formation was rooted in the planned economy era. In the late 1970s, the Ministry of Machinery Industry organized a technical team in Wuxi to tackle issues related to oil pump nozzles, mobilizing over 200 experts to the city. One of the reasons for choosing Wuxi was the presence of key enterprises in the oil-free industry, following the traditional "one plant, one" model. In the 1980s, as the state began its first science and technology system reform, funding for research institutions was gradually reduced. By 1990, government funding had dropped to just 20% of its original level, forcing Oil-Free to rely more on self-funding. Throughout this period, Oil-Free maintained a long-term partnership with Weifu (Oil-Free Plant), contributing significantly to the development of the domestic industry. Zhu Wenbin, the first director of Oil-Free, played a pivotal role in shifting the focus from supporting agricultural machinery to serving internal combustion engines, which helped establish Weifu as a leader in the industry. Over time, collaboration between the two entities expanded, including joint research projects and technology transfers. Even today, the chief engineer at Weifu was once part of Oil-Free, and many of the institute’s technical resources were freely shared with the factory. In the mid-1990s, as part of the second major scientific and technological restructuring, Oil-Free proactively sought new opportunities and joined FAW Group in 1995, becoming one of the earliest restructured research institutes. Although the name changed to "China FAW Group Corporation," it retained its original identity and continued to serve the industry. A major strategic shift occurred when Oil-Free moved from a narrow-focused research institute to a comprehensive engine research center. Previously, pump nozzle research was restricted from engine-related studies, but Oil-Free expanded its scope to include combustion systems, intake and exhaust systems, valve trains, lubrication, supercharging, simulation, and cooling technologies. It also divided its R&D efforts into short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals to better align with industry needs and global standards. This shift enabled Oil-Free to focus on cutting-edge fuel injection technologies, improving engine performance, and maintaining international competitiveness. The market-oriented approach allowed the institute to continue its R&D activities based on industry needs, reinforcing its commitment to driving technological progress. From its early days, Oil-Free was not a closed organization. It actively engaged with foreign experts, such as British CAV specialists and former Soviet researchers, to exchange knowledge and improve its capabilities. During the mechanical pump era, Oil-Free successfully developed its own designs, like the BQ pump in 1983 and the BX pump, which became widely used in the market. As emission standards became stricter, many domestic companies struggled to meet requirements, leading to resistance from OEMs. With its strong technical foundation, Oil-Free participated in numerous transformation projects, helping companies upgrade their engines to comply with regulations. It was among the first in China to meet the European I and II emission standards. The chairman of Shandong Longkou Pump Nozzle Factory credits Oil-Free's development of the Euro II system for rescuing China's oil nozzle industry. Through continuous innovation, Oil-Free has supported multiple domestic manufacturers, including Shandong Longkou Pump Factory, ASIMCO, and Beijing Pump Factory. Many enterprises have directly or indirectly benefited from Oil-Free’s technological advancements and accumulated expertise.
