Recently, an old sea patrol boat that had been out of service for years due to the inability to power its air conditioning system with DC batteries has found new life thanks to the innovative efforts of the Zhenjiang Maritime Safety Administration.
The vessel, known as "Sea Patrol 0824," is a 15-meter FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) modified boat. Originally designed without an AC power system, it struggled to operate its air conditioning during long voyages. In the summer months, temperatures inside the cabin often exceeded 40°C, making it nearly impossible for crew members to work comfortably. During winter, cold waves would hit the cabin, causing windows to frost over and creating hazardous conditions. These issues not only affected crew comfort but also posed challenges to safe navigation.
To solve this problem, the maintenance team from Zhenjiang Maritime Safety Bureau took on the challenge. They collaborated with local manufacturers, conducted extensive research, and developed a DC inverter booster power supply system. This innovation allows the boat’s DC batteries to be converted into AC voltage through the inverter, enabling the air conditioner to run efficiently. The system provides up to 1.5 hours of continuous operation after a 6-hour charge, significantly improving working conditions on board.
Thanks to this breakthrough, the once-idle "Sea Patrol 0824" has returned to active service on the Yangtze River. The success of this technology not only saved the unit tens of thousands of yuan in generator costs but also opens up new possibilities for use in special environments and emergency power systems for computers. It's a perfect example of how creativity and engineering can breathe new life into old equipment.
